I have also found to my surprise that my Cygwin installation seems to be making better use of VcXsrv, since without Cygwin's X running, I can issue X window apps from the Cygwin command line, and the apps show up on the desktop, which is also used by Cygwin.

While you do need to open a firewall rule for the X server, this is most easily done if Defender is running when you initially attempt to connect to the X Server (which I'm assuming you still need to install).

It looks like your DISPLAY environment variable is incorrectly set it should be set to :0 and not 172.26.48.1:0.0, probably a remnant of Vcxsrv uninstall.
Basically you need to figure out the location of the xauth data and put that path into the XAUTHORITY environment variable.

Then I deleted all of the .Xauthority files in my home directory.
Based on suggestions above, mentioned in other search hits as well, i tried running ls -alF /tmp/.X11-unix && sudo rm -r /tmp/.X11-unix which produces rm: cannot remove '/tmp/.X11-unix': Device or resource busy so that leaves me unable to try the next step that is supposed to follow that ln -s /mnt/wslg/.X11-unix /tmp/.X11-unix. Some web searches and pages like this suggests this is part of AVX.

I work at a public library. Like /var/tmp. It is extremely rare that overriding DISPLAY in .profile or .bashrc or similar files can do anything useful.
