Theories of social evolution go back to the second half of the nineteenth century to Spencer, Morgan, Tylor, and Marx and Engels. But, insofar as Engelss Marxist view constituted a branch of evolutionary thought, it was subject to many of the same objections raised against other evolutionary theories. They, too, need support systems to help them meet their responsibilities in healthy ways, along with clear-cut rules to prevent abuse or blatant unfairness when relationships end.
